Each year, the Joint Operations Support (JOS) Safety Conference, hosted by Equinor , brings together representatives from the supply chain for a day of safety, HSE and experience sharing. It is an arena where the topics on the agenda never become outdated, no matter how many times they have been previously discussed and shared.
This year, Ingri Bangsund Nordahl, Morten Walde and Stine Løvfall represented Setsaas TS Group at the conference.
Break down silos – sharing experiences across company boundaries
If the industry is to develop further in HSE, silo thinking must be reduced, expertise must be further developed and experiences must be shared. In other words, safety cannot be something we work on
with each of us for ourselves. Best practices are developed when experiences and learning move across company boundaries.
The JOS Security Conference is a good example of how such sharing can work in practice. Success stories are important, but alone they provide an incomplete picture. At least as valuable learning can be found in incidents and situations that did not develop as planned, and in the reflections on what worked and what could have been done differently.
An event that provided learning
Among the presentations at this year's conference, Tor Egil Hopen Saue from Equinor, along with Ingri Bangsund Nordahl and Morten Walde from TS Group, shared experiences and lessons learned from a critical incident at Oseberg earlier this year.
The presentation highlighted the dynamics of the transition from an established alarm and emergency plan to actual alarm and emergency mobilization. A situation can develop quickly when a normal work operation turns into an extraordinary event, and the experiences showed the importance of both preparation, interaction and the ability to handle a situation that changes character along the way.
Investigation reports and systematic follow-up are important parts of the learning process, but the value increases when the experiences are also shared, discussed and used in practice. Arenas like the JOS Security Conference add something extra: The experiences are communicated directly by those who were involved, thus opening up dialogue, reflection and questions across companies.
It also contributes to a culture where it is both natural and necessary to talk openly about what was handled well, and about what we can do even better next time.
