Hot tap / Line stop

Hot tap / Line stop

TS Site Services performs necessary work on pressurized pipe systems while the plant is in operation. This avoids interruptions and interventions in production. The technicians perform the work with equipment adapted to pressures, temperatures and pipe dimensions. With the help of our broad, interdisciplinary experience from both onshore and offshore plants, we always coordinate our work with other services on site. This way we reduce both time and complexity for you.

What is Hot Tap?

Hot Tap is a method of creating a controlled branch on a pressurized piping system without downtime. This allows new lines, valves, sensors or measurement points to be connected while the plant is in full production. The operation is performed by technicians with custom tees and fittings that match the pipe type, pressure and temperature.

Areas of use:

Tie-ins and new branches:

When a new line is to be connected to existing pipes.

By-pass installations:

To direct the flow around zones to be processed.

Installation of valves, sensors and measuring points:

Connection without shutdown.

Connections on pipes, tanks and heat exchangers:

In case of expansions or modifications.

What is Line Stop?

Line Stop is used to temporarily shut off the flow in a pressurized pipe so that a section can be isolated for work, without draining the system and without the rest of the plant stopping.

Areas of use:

Valve replacement:

Safe replacement of valves without stopping the system.

Replacing or removing pipe sections:

Executed without clearing the entire line.

Repair of leaks:

Insulation of the area to be repaired.

Temporary insulation of pipework:

Work on one part while the rest goes on as normal.

By-pass under construction:

Maintains flow when a section is closed.

More about the services

Yes. Hot Tap and Line Stop are internationally recognized methods that follow strict safety requirements. TS Site Services conducts risk analyses, integrity checks and pressure calculations before each operation. All work is carried out by certified technicians with extensive experience.

There are many advantages to Hot Tap, including: No downtime, no emissions or product loss, reduced need for rework, shorter planning time and lower costs, and that it is a documented safe and precise method.

Hot Tap is a safe and efficient method for creating a new branch on a pressurized piping system, without downtime and without spillage or loss of product. This makes it possible to expand or change piping systems while the plant is in full operation. The method is used in the process industry, oil and gas, refinery, petrochemical and energy production, among others.

Line Stop is a method of temporarily isolating a section of a piping system using a plug, without reducing pressure or draining the system. This allows repairs, replacements or modifications to be carried out while the rest of the system continues to operate normally.

TS Site Services supplies and customizes Hot Tap Tees and fittings according to pipe size, pressure, temperature and process medium. Fittings can be welded or bolted solutions, adapted for offset drilling and angled drilling and designed for tank wall drilling and special geometries.

All equipment is dimensioned according to current standards and requirements for integrity in the piping system.

TS Site Services offers Line Stop solutions for low, medium and high pressure systems. All operations are calculated and designed by our own engineers according to current standards and adapted to the plant's operating situation.

We can deliver the service throughout the country, both onshore and offshore, regardless of the location of the facility or installation. TS Site Services also has experience in delivering internationally, and we take on assignments outside Norway's borders.

  1. A tee or fitting is installed on the pipe.
  2. A valve is installed and tested for tightness.
  3. The Hot Tap machine drills through the valve while the piping system is pressurized.
  4. The drill bit is retracted, the valve is closed – and a new connection is ready.

TS Site Services' technicians carry out the operation in close collaboration with the customer's personnel, with a focus on safety and minimal strain on production.

The combination makes it possible to perform complex interventions on active systems without shutting down production. The Hot Tap establishes the branch, while the Line Stop inserts the plugging tool that creates a pressure-proof isolation.

There are many reasons to choose TS Site Services, among them: Certified technicians and engineering support, onshore and offshore mobilization, customized solutions for complex, pressurized systems, and documented and proven procedures.

Hot Tap is ideal when production cannot be stopped, when redesigning piping systems would be costly, when quick changes or new connections are needed and when branching must be established before a Line Stop operation.

Common applications for Hot Tap are Tie-ins and new branches, by-pass installations, valve assembly, installation of sensors, probes and instrumentation, and expansions and new construction of piping systems.

Typical situations are when replacing or repairing valves, repairing or removing pipe sections, temporarily isolating facilities, establishing by-passes during work, and repairing leaks.

Line Stop is always performed after a Hot Tap is completed.
