The fall semester is well underway at TS Academy, and the gas inspector course was recently completed in Bergen.
The course lasts three days and combines theory and practice in gas measurement, risk assessment, safe work execution, gas release and exposure. After a final written test, participants obtain certification, which also qualifies for registration in the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority's inspector register.
Among the participants this time were May Iren Ø. Hansen (32) from Haugesund and Vanessa Mannes (34) from Karmøy. Both are employed by TS Group and work as process technicians on Melkøya for Equinor. They left with both good experiences and fresh expertise after completing the course.
Vanessa has worked as a process technician for twelve years, first at Hydro in Karmøy, before moving on to Melkøya. May Iren previously worked as a hairdresser, but wanted a change and took a certificate in process in 2021 at Equinor's facility in Kårstø. For both, gas control and the course topics were new, and for Equinor it was a requirement that they acquire this competence.
Three intensive but educational days have been completed. Instructor Terje receives much praise for his committed style and ability to create a good learning environment. From the first day, the participants were put into groups, which contributed to good dynamics and cooperation. The fact that the classroom was not crowded is also highlighted as a strength, since it provided room for dialogue and close follow-up.
The topics were experienced as both concrete and relevant. The focus was on measurement principles, how sensors work and their limitations, both for flammable gases, oxygen and hazardous substances. Gas control and steam were also thoroughly reviewed.
– The basics are in place now, says May Iren.
Vanessa nods in the affirmative and adds that they both feel confident in both the theory and the practical use of measuring equipment.
The exam is also highlighted as well-conducted. They recommend prospective participants to take good notes, as these will be useful during the test, where aids are allowed. The answer to how it went also came quickly: Just under ten minutes after submitting, they were notified that both had passed.
In an industry where safety always comes first, the course is a reminder that new skills can be built regardless of background. On Monday, May Iren and Vanessa showed up as curious participants in Bergen. On Wednesday, they got in the car back to Haugalandet, before heading north again to Melkøya – now with fresh certification in their luggage.
